President Bola Tinubu has signed a bill establishing the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET) in Ogoni, Rivers State. The institution, to be located in Tai, aims to promote environmental justice, clean energy, and sustainable development in the Niger Delta region.

During the signing ceremony in Abuja, Tinubu emphasized that the creation of FUET is a response to the long-standing environmental struggles faced by the Ogoni people. He acknowledged their advocacy for ecological restoration and stated that the university would serve as a center for knowledge and innovation, equipping young Nigerians with the skills to tackle environmental challenges.

He also commended the National Assembly for passing the bill and praised the persistent efforts of Ogoni leaders in pushing for the institution. The president urged stakeholders, including traditional institutions, academia, and private sector partners, to support FUET’s mission.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, highlighted that the university will prioritize programs in environmental science, sustainable technology, and clean energy to address pressing ecological concerns. Similarly, National Security Adviser Malam Nuhu Ribadu described the initiative as a significant step toward addressing environmental degradation in Ogoniland.

Senator Mpigi Barinada, representing the Ogoni delegation, expressed gratitude to Tinubu and acknowledged the contributions of key government officials in ensuring the bill’s success. He described FUET as a beacon of hope that will foster peace and development in the region.
