President Bola Tinubu has reassured state governors that the federal government has no intention of taking control of local government areas (LGAs). Speaking in Lagos during a New Year visit by the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) and Vice-President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu emphasized the importance of collaboration and local government autonomy in fostering grassroots development.
The president called on governors to lead Nigeria's agricultural revolution and improve economic stability, highlighting their critical role in the nation’s prosperity. Tinubu reiterated that the federal government controls only 30-35% of allocated revenue, leaving substantial resources for states to drive local development.
"There is no fight over LGA autonomy. You control them, and we must collaborate to ensure Nigeria thrives," Tinubu stated. He also underscored the need for enhanced agricultural productivity and urged governors to take pride in their achievements.
Tinubu announced plans to visit Enugu State on January 4 to assess progress and strengthen ties across the federation. NGF Chairman AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq praised Tinubu’s agricultural policies, noting notable gains in food security.
The governors pledged their support for Tinubu's vision, highlighting ongoing efforts to stockpile agricultural produce for future stability. Tinubu expressed optimism about Nigeria's resilience and urged unified efforts to create a nation of shared pride and prosperity.
