President Bola Tinubu has urged African leaders to draw lessons from Ghana's recent peaceful elections, which he hailed as an example of democratic maturity and national unity. He commended Ghana's December 7 presidential and parliamentary elections for their smooth process and peaceful transition of power.
In a statement from Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised President Nana Akufo-Addo and the people of Ghana for demonstrating a high standard of democracy in the region. He specifically noted the graceful concession of defeat by Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which occurred before the official announcement of results, as a sign of political maturity.
Tinubu also acknowledged Akufo-Addo’s leadership role during his term as chair of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), calling him a strong Pan-African leader. He urged all ECOWAS countries to uphold the founding values of the organization, including peace, prosperity, and economic integration.
Alongside celebrating Ghana’s democratic achievements, Tinubu congratulated Ghana’s Foreign Minister Shirley Botchwey on her appointment as the new Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. He also praised Senegal for its successful parliamentary elections and reiterated the need for ECOWAS nations to focus on regional peace, security, and sustainable development as they work toward a more integrated West Africa.
