During the inauguration of Ghana's President John Mahama in Accra on January 7, 2025, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu emphasized Africa's commitment to unity despite internal disagreements. His statement came amid the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) after military juntas took power and sought new alliances, particularly with Russia.

Tinubu reaffirmed that African countries must engage in dialogue even in times of disagreement, stressing that the continent would not allow external forces to disrupt its unity. He highlighted the importance of African nations working towards common goals of peace, stability, and economic development. According to Tinubu, Africa has nothing to prove to outsiders, as the continent is capable of achieving democratic and productive advancements on its terms.

In his speech, the Nigerian president paid tribute to Ghana’s past leaders, particularly Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, whose spirit he said continues to inspire the nation. He also praised Mahama for his vision, calling him a leader with "patriotic vision and substance."
