President Bola Tinubu formally decorated Olufemi Oluyede as acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS) with the rank of lieutenant-general at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Oluyede will serve as COAS temporarily, filling in for Taoreed Lagbaja, who is recovering from an illness. Defence Minister Badaru Abubakar attended the ceremony.

President Bola Tinubu recently appointed Olufemi Oluyede as acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), granting him the rank of lieutenant-general in an official ceremony at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. This elevation comes as Oluyede temporarily steps in for Taoreed Lagbaja, the substantive COAS, who is currently on medical leave.

The ceremony, held on November 5, highlighted Tinubu’s intention to maintain stability and leadership within the Nigerian Army during Lagbaja's recovery. Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s special adviser on information and strategy, clarified that Oluyede will serve in an acting capacity until Lagbaja returns. This temporary appointment aims to ensure continuity and readiness in the army’s operations amidst pressing security issues nationwide.

Defense Minister Badaru Abubakar, along with other prominent officials, was present at the event, signaling strong government support for Oluyede in his interim role. The decoration marks an important milestone for Oluyede, underscoring his capability and the trust placed in him to lead the nation’s armed forces during a critical period.

Tinubu’s decision reflects a commitment to sustaining robust leadership and preparedness within the military. As Oluyede takes on his duties, there is anticipation regarding his approach to addressing ongoing security challenges, while the government awaits Lagbaja’s eventual return to duty.
