President Bola Tinubu reshuffles leadership at Nigeria's federal universities, including appointing new vice-chancellors and pro-chancellors at the University of Abuja (Yakubu Gowon University) and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The changes aim to enhance governance and academic excellence in Nigeria’s higher education sector.
President Bola Tinubu has made significant leadership changes in federal universities across Nigeria, including the University of Abuja, now rebranded as Yakubu Gowon University. The changes, announced by Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, are effective immediately.
Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi has been relieved of her duties as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, with Senator Lanre Tejuoso appointed as Pro-Chancellor of the newly named university. Tejuoso replaces Senator Joy Emordi, who now assumes the Pro-Chancellor role at the University of Agriculture, Makurdi.
Professor Lar Patricia Manko has been appointed Acting Vice-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University for a six-month term, but she will not be eligible to apply for the permanent position once it becomes available.
At the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), President Tinubu removed Professor Polycarp Emeka Chigbu as Acting Vice-Chancellor, appointing Professor Oguejiofu T. Ujam as his successor for a six-month term, with no eligibility for the permanent position.
Additionally, there were changes to the Pro-Chancellor positions at both UNN and other universities. Gen. Ike Nwachukwu has been reassigned to the University of Uyo, with Engineer Olubunmi Kayode Ojo taking over as Pro-Chancellor at UNN. Ojo was previously the Pro-Chancellor at Federal University Lokoja.
These appointments reflect President Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening governance and academic leadership in Nigeria’s higher education system.
