President Bola Tinubu praised NNPC GCEO Mele Kyari on his 60th birthday, citing achievements in reviving refineries, boosting oil production, and advancing Nigeria's energy sector. However, recent public protests highlight criticisms of Kyari’s leadership, including rising fuel prices and economic challenges, reflecting a mixed legacy of progress and controversy.
President Bola Tinubu has commended Mele Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, on his 60th birthday. In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised Kyari’s impact on the transformation of the NNPC.
Tinubu highlighted several achievements under Kyari’s leadership, including the revitalization of two refineries, an increase in domestic natural gas usage, and a rise in oil production to 1.8 million barrels per day. He described Kyari as a dedicated professional whose leadership aligns with the ideals of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The president also acknowledged Kyari’s role within the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), calling him a mentor to future energy sector leaders. Tinubu expressed hope for Kyari’s continued health and wisdom in advancing Nigeria’s energy goals.
Despite these commendations, Kyari’s leadership has faced public criticism. In November 2024, thousands of protesters gathered in Abuja, demanding his resignation over alleged failures in addressing fuel shortages and high petrol prices. Activists claimed his leadership exacerbated economic hardships for Nigerians.
