President Bola Tinubu convened a second Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting within 24 hours to address a backlog of memos. The session included key government officials and agencies like the EFCC. The council approved ₦4.8 billion for HIV treatment packs amid concerns over U.S. policy changes affecting health funding.
President Bola Tinubu held another Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Tuesday, just one day after the previous session. The meeting began at 1:26 p.m. at the Presidential Villa in Abuja and marked the second part of a two-day extended session. The government is addressing a backlog of memos that accumulated due to a pause in meetings since December.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, explained that the overflow of memos led to the back-to-back meetings. The administration is determined to tackle the pending matters promptly to move forward with its governance agenda.
Present at the meeting were Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator George Akume, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and the Head of Civil Service Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, along with other key ministers.
A major decision made at the meeting was the approval of ₦4.8 billion for the Presidential Treatment Programme, which aims to distribute 150,000 HIV treatment packs between February and May 2025. This decision follows recent shifts in U.S. policies that affect Nigeria’s healthcare programs, particularly HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria initiatives.
Additionally, various ministries and agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), presented their memos for discussion. The government is focused on resolving these issues to ensure smooth governance and to plan for upcoming social and economic projects.
