President Bola Tinubu has mourned the passing of Afenifere leader Ayo Adebanjo, who died at 96. Despite political differences, Tinubu described him as a father figure and a fearless advocate for democracy. Adebanjo played a key role in Nigeria’s democratic struggles, leaving behind a lasting political legacy.

President Bola Tinubu has expressed his condolences over the passing of Ayo Adebanjo, a veteran politician and prominent leader of Afenifere, who died at 96 in his Lagos residence.

In a statement, Tinubu described Adebanjo as a courageous voice in Nigeria’s political landscape, highlighting his contributions to democracy and governance. The president acknowledged their recent political differences but emphasized that he always saw Adebanjo as a father figure.

Adebanjo was a key figure in Nigeria’s fight against military rule, playing a major role in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) that opposed dictatorship in the 1990s. He was also a close associate of Chief Obafemi Awolowo and held leadership positions in the Action Group and the Unity Party of Nigeria.

Despite not supporting Tinubu’s presidential bid in 2023 and backing Labour Party’s Peter Obi, the president stated that his admiration for Adebanjo remained unchanged. He credited Adebanjo’s guidance for shaping his political career, particularly during his early days as Lagos governor.

Tinubu’s message acknowledged Adebanjo’s strong-willed nature and his commitment to justice, describing him as a statesman who left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s political history.

Adebanjo is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. His passing marks the end of an era for Nigeria’s progressive political movement.
