The award acknowledges Nigeria's commitment to strengthening ties with India, and the leaders are set to sign key bilateral agreements.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu awarded Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) in recognition of the strong bilateral relationship between the two nations. The honor was presented during a meeting at Aso Rock in Abuja, highlighting the ongoing collaboration between Nigeria and India.
Tinubu praised Modi for his consistent leadership, especially for securing three consecutive elections in India, which he described as a remarkable accomplishment. The Nigerian president emphasized that the award was a symbol of Nigeria’s appreciation for India as a crucial partner and acknowledged India’s commitment to democratic principles, which align with Nigeria’s own values.
Modi, who arrived in Abuja on Saturday evening, received a formal welcome the following day, complete with the Indian national anthem and a guard of honor. The ceremony culminated in a private discussion between the two leaders, where they explored potential avenues for expanding the partnership between their countries.
This visit marks the first by an Indian prime minister to Nigeria since 2007 when Manmohan Singh made his trip. During this visit, both leaders are expected to sign several Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs), with the aim of enhancing cooperation in various areas, including trade, security, and technology. The strengthened ties between Nigeria and India are expected to benefit both nations in the years to come.
