President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has issued a stern warning to terrorists and bandits operating in the country, urging them to surrender or face deadly force. Speaking at a News Agency of Nigeria lecture, Tinubu, represented by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, outlined the government's multifaceted approach to tackling security challenges.
The administration claims to have implemented both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies to combat threats across Nigeria in the past year. Tinubu emphasized that the government is determined to confront and eliminate groups involved in terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping.
The president highlighted that many people in northern Nigeria are returning to their homes due to improved security, which is expected to boost food production. He also warned that the government would crack down on corruption.
Former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar attributed insecurity in the Sahel region to factors such as poverty, unemployment, weak governance, and climate change. The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, acknowledged the complex nature of insecurity in the region but affirmed Nigeria's resilience in confronting these challenges.
The Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, reiterated that security remains a top priority for the administration. He noted that Nigeria has acquired additional military equipment and is strengthening regional cooperation to address security issues.
ECOWAS also announced plans to activate a 5,000-strong force to combat terrorism in West Africa, revealing that 1,605 terrorist attacks were recorded in the region between January and August 2024
