President Tinubu appoints Mohammed Shehu as FRSC Corps Marshal, replacing Dauda Ali Biu. Shehu's tenure aims to enhance road safety amidst rising concerns. Mixed reactions emerge, with expectations for Shehu to address systemic challenges.

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Assistant Corps Marshal Mohammed Shehu as the new Corps Marshal/Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC). Shehu replaces Dauda Ali Biu, who had been acting as the Corps Marshal since the retirement of the last substantive Corps Marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi, in 2023. The appointment, announced by the director of information in the office of the secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), Segun Imohiosen, is for an initial period of four years, effective from May 20, 2024, in line with the relevant provisions of the Act establishing the Corps. President Tinubu has tasked the appointee to bring his wealth of experience to bear in his new assignment.

The appointment of Mohammed Shehu comes amid growing concerns over road safety in Nigeria. With his extensive experience in the field, there are expectations for Shehu to spearhead initiatives aimed at reducing road accidents and fatalities. However, he will face challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, enforcement issues, and the need for public awareness campaigns. Stakeholders await Shehu's strategic plans to address these challenges and improve road safety across the country.

The appointment has elicited mixed reactions from various quarters. While some commend President Tinubu's choice and express optimism about Shehu's leadership, others raise concerns about the need for comprehensive reforms within the FRSC to tackle systemic issues. Public expectations are high, and many await tangible results under Shehu's tenure as Corps Marshal.
