President Bola Tinubu, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu paid tribute to late banker Herbert Wigwe on the first anniversary of his passing. Remembered for his leadership in finance and philanthropy, Wigwe’s legacy continues to inspire. A memorial was held in Lagos to honor his impact.
President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to the late banking mogul Herbert Wigwe, marking the first anniversary of his passing. Wigwe, along with his wife Chizoba, son Chizi, and former Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) president Abimbola Ogunbajo, died in a helicopter crash in the U.S.
During a memorial service held in Lagos on Sunday, Tinubu, represented by Finance Minister Wale Edun, described Wigwe as a visionary leader whose contributions to banking, education, and philanthropy left an enduring impact.
“Wigwe was more than a banker. He was a builder – of institutions, of dreams, and of people,” Tinubu said, emphasizing the businessman’s role in youth empowerment and economic development.
The president extended condolences to the Wigwe family, Access Holdings, and others affected by his loss, stating that while Nigeria lost a “shining star,” his influence would not fade.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo also paid his respects, acknowledging Wigwe’s lasting imprint on the financial sector. He described the banker as an accessible leader committed to uplifting those around him.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reflected on Wigwe’s dedication to the state’s development, calling him “larger than life” and praising his efforts to advance investment and economic growth.
As the nation remembers Wigwe, tributes continue to pour in, celebrating his legacy as a transformative force in Nigeria’s banking and business landscape.
