In a surprising shake-up of agencies under the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, President Bola Tinubu has removed the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Danbatta, replacing him with Aminu Maida. The announcement was made by Presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale.
This move comes as a surprise to the information and communications technology (ICT) sector, as Danbatta had been reappointed for a second five-year term in July 2020, with approximately two years remaining in his tenure.
In addition to Danbatta, Tinubu also terminated the appointment of the recently appointed MD/CEO of the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT), Tukur Mohammed Lawal. The shake-up affected the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) as well, with the removal of its Postmaster General/CEO, Hon. Adepoju Adeyemi Sunday, and the appointment of Tola Odeyemi as the new Postmaster General/CEO.
While there were numerous removals, President Tinubu also renewed the appointments of several agency heads, including Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, who will continue as the Director-General/CEO of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA). Dr. Vincent Olatunji's appointment as National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) was also renewed
