President Tinubu signs the South-West and South-South Development Commission bills into law, completing regional development commissions across Nigeria. The move aims to decentralize governance and promote infrastructural development in every geo-political zone.
President Bola Tinubu has officially enacted legislation for the creation of development commissions for both the South-West and South-South regions. This move follows the previous establishment of similar bodies for the South-East and North-West, marking a significant step in the government's push to promote equitable regional development across Nigeria.
Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, announced during a session in the House. Kalu emphasized that these commissions will serve as crucial mechanisms for delivering tangible benefits to local communities across the regions.
“We believe that no effort is too great when it comes to fostering development and delivering democracy’s benefits directly to the people," Kalu said. He added that the creation of these commissions ensures that President Tinubu’s administration’s impact will be felt more widely, particularly in underserved areas.
The newly established commissions will focus on addressing the unique developmental needs of their respective regions by directing resources into infrastructure, education, healthcare, and other vital sectors. The goal is to reduce regional inequalities and stimulate growth where it’s most needed.
This legislation is part of President Tinubu's broader strategy to foster national unity and ensure balanced development, with the South-West and South-South now joining the list of regions benefitting from specialized focus through these new structures.
