The Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre in Amman, Jordan, recently published a list of the 500 most influential Muslims globally. Among the honourees are 15 Nigerians, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Sultan of Sokoto Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubakar III, and the Emir of Kano Aminu Ado Bayero.
President Tinubu's inclusion is noteworthy, particularly given the discussions surrounding his Islamic faith leading to Nigeria's 2023 general elections. The list also recognises the National Missioner and Chief Imam of Ansar Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Sheikh Abdur-Rahman Ahmad, who has been consistently present since 2016.
This recognition is not only a testament to the individual achievements of these Nigerians but also highlights their positive representation of Islam to non-Muslims. Notably, the Sultan of Sokoto and Ibrahim Saleh Al-Hussaini ranked 18th and 45th, respectively.
In the business sector, Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group of Companies, was ranked as the 162nd most influential Muslim leader globally. The list categorises individuals under various sectors, including scholarly, religious affairs administration, business, and philanthropy.
This recognition underscores the significant role that Nigeria's Muslim leaders play on the global stage. Their influence extends beyond religious teachings, impacting social, political, and economic spheres, thus fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of Islam.
