President Bola Tinubu announced on Monday the immediate suspension of the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, following a series of controversies surrounding financial transactions within her ministry.
The suspension comes in the wake of revelations regarding the approval of payments amounting to hundreds of millions of naira into private accounts of civil servants. Presidential spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale conveyed the President's commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability in the management of Nigeria's resources.
In addition to the suspension, President Tinubu has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to conduct a thorough investigation into all financial transactions involving the ministry.
The suspended Minister is required to hand over to the Permanent Secretary and fully cooperate with the investigating authorities. Furthermore, a panel led by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance will conduct a comprehensive diagnostic on the financial architecture of social investment programs, aiming to eliminate institutional frailties and restore public confidence.
These directives take immediate effect, signaling a significant development in the ongoing saga. Stay tuned for updates on this evolving story.
