President Bola Tinubu has unveiled 30 locally assembled compressed natural gas (CNG) buses, marking a significant step in Nigeria’s shift towards sustainable transportation. The inauguration took place on Monday at the State House in Abuja.
According to Bayo Onanuga, the President's special adviser on information and strategy, these CNG buses were provided by the Depots and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited. Specifically, DAPPMAN donated 20 buses, while NNPC contributed the remaining 10.
These buses were assembled by Innoson Motors, a leading Nigerian automotive company. This collaboration between the government and Innoson Motors is part of a broader initiative to enhance the adoption of CNG vehicles in Nigeria.
Innoson Motors’ CEO, Innocent Chukwuma, previously met with President Tinubu to discuss expanding CNG vehicle production. Chukwuma expressed confidence that the CNG initiative will soon have a visible impact nationwide.
This move aligns with the federal government's plan to promote CNG as an alternative to premium motor spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol. The administration has committed N100 billion for the acquisition of 3,000 CNG-powered buses, with further incentives like waiving value-added tax (VAT) on CNG bus purchases.
