Billionaire banker and philanthropist, Tony Elumelu, has expressed interest in the possibility of acquiring a local club in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), deeming it "a nice idea."
Elumelu's remarks came in response to a social media user's suggestion advocating for top corporations to invest in NPFL clubs to enhance competition and corporate social responsibility (CSR).
The suggestion proposed Dangote acquiring Kano Pillars, BUA buying Kwara United, Elumelu taking over Rivers United, and Geregu acquiring 3SC. Elumelu confirmed that the Sports Minister, Senator John Enoh, had approached him regarding potential acquisitions, signaling a government push for corporate involvement in the league.
This development underscores efforts to revitalize the NPFL amid financial challenges and dwindling fortunes in recent years.
