A Jos trader, Zih Davou, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for stealing a goat from a man’s property. The sentence was handed down by Magistrate Shawomi Bokkos after Davou pleaded guilty to the charge. Bokkos also gave the trader an option to pay a N50,000 fine or serve a one-year sentence, in addition to N50,000 compensation to the victim, or face another six months in prison.
The prosecution, led by Inspector Ijuptil Thiawur, explained that the theft occurred on August 19 when Davou unlawfully entered the complainant’s home and took a goat valued at N100,000. It was also revealed that Davou had been arrested previously for another theft from the same house, which included 15 measures of rice, 10 measures of fertilizer, and a bundle of zinc.
The act violated the Plateau Penal Code Law, and the court’s ruling was made after a summary trial. Davou’s actions have drawn attention to the issue of property theft in the region.
