At least seven people were killed on Saturday after two suspected suicide bombers attacked wedding guests in Marrarraban Gwoza, Borno state. According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, many victims were returning from a wedding ceremony when the first bomber, a young woman in her early 20s, detonated her explosive near a motor park. The injured were taken to a hospital in Gwoza.
Shortly after, another bomber, disguised as a mourner, detonated an explosive in Gwoza LGA as residents prepared for the burial of the first attack's victims. This second attack resulted in one death and injured 16 others. Yusuf Lawal, the Borno commissioner of police, confirmed the incident.
In response to these attacks, the military imposed a curfew in Gwoza LGA to secure the town from further threats. These tragic events underscore the ongoing security challenges in the region, despite efforts to combat insurgency.
In a related incident in March 2024, two people were injured when an improvised explosive device (IED) strapped to a suspected suicide bomber detonated near a mosque in Biu LGA, Borno state.
