The disaster occurred as residents attempted to collect spilled fuel from the overturned tanker, igniting a massive inferno. Authorities are conducting a mass burial for the victims.

In a heartbreaking incident in Jigawa State, Nigeria, a petrol tanker explosion resulted in the deaths of 94 people early Wednesday morning. The explosion took place around 12:30 AM in Majiya Town, Taura Local Government Area after the driver lost control of the tanker, which was en route from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer of Jigawa State Command, DSP Lawan Adam, the explosion was triggered when residents attempted to scoop up the spilled fuel from the overturned tanker. “The residents were gathering fuel when the explosion occurred, leading to a large fire that killed 94 people immediately,” he explained.

In addition to the fatalities, around 50 others suffered serious injuries and were rushed to Ringim and Hadejia General Hospitals for treatment. DSP Adam characterized the event as a “horrific tragedy” and urged the public to recognize the dangers of trying to collect fuel from accident sites.

The Commissioner of Police in Jigawa State, AT Abdullahi, extended his condolences to the bereaved families, highlighting the necessity of safety awareness. Eyewitness accounts described the chaos and panic as people desperately sought to escape the flames. One survivor, Sani Umar, recounted the terrifying scene, stating that many were running in all directions, pleading for help. Authorities are now preparing for a mass burial for the victims as the community grapples with this devastating loss.
