A 19-year-old student, Paul Odikanwa, tragically lost his life after being allegedly shot by a landlord in Owerri, Imo State, while attempting to retrieve a football that had entered the man's compound.
Paul’s father, Jonathan Odikanwa, shared that his son was playing football with his friends when the ball accidentally went into a neighbor’s compound. While attempting to retrieve it by climbing the fence, a gunshot suddenly rang out, leaving Paul critically wounded. His schoolmates immediately took him to the hospital, while the school authorities alerted his family and the police.
The accused landlord, an elderly man, initially denied shooting the teenager, claiming he only attempted to scare him by making noise with a polythene bag. However, witnesses contradicted his statement, alleging that he fired multiple shots into the air after hitting Paul.
Medical examinations, including X-rays and scans, revealed that Paul had sustained severe internal injuries. He later underwent surgery, where doctors discovered that his intestines had been damaged. Despite medical efforts, he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The police have transferred the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, with an autopsy expected as part of the investigation. The Imo State government has also shown interest in the matter. Paul’s grieving father described him as a respectful young man with a passion for football and aspirations for higher education.
Although the landlord’s sister contributed to Paul’s medical bills, Jonathan Odikanwa expressed deep sorrow over his son’s untimely death. He is calling for justice but remains uncertain about pursuing legal action. Meanwhile, the police have been praised for their swift response in handling the case.
