At least 50 people were killed in a devastating petrol tanker explosion on Saturday at Dikko Junction in Gurara Local Government Area, Niger State. The tragedy occurred when the driver attempted to transfer spilled petrol from a damaged tanker to another. The process, involving a generator, ignited the fuel, triggering a massive explosion.

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) confirmed the casualties and reported extensive property damage. Abdullahi Baba, NSEMA’s Director-General, described the incident as catastrophic, noting that several individuals also sustained severe injuries.

Governor Umar Bago expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy, labeling it “heartbreaking and worrisome.” In a statement through his spokesperson, the governor extended condolences to the victims' families, urged caution among residents, and directed state agencies to take preventative measures against such disasters.

This incident follows a series of tanker explosions across Nigeria in recent months, including one in Delta State earlier this month and others in Jigawa last year. These events highlight ongoing safety challenges surrounding the transportation and handling of petroleum products in the country.

Authorities have called for stricter safety protocols to prevent future tragedies, with the state government emphasizing its commitment to ensuring public safety. Investigations into the Gurara explosion are ongoing.
