A fuel tanker explosion in Karamin Rami village, Niger State, killed seven people and injured one after spilled fuel ignited a fire. Poor road conditions contributed to the accident. Authorities are investigating the disaster while emphasizing the need for improved road infrastructure and stricter fuel transportation regulations.

A tragic fuel tanker explosion in Karamin Rami village, Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State has claimed seven lives and left one person severely injured. The incident occurred on March 4, 2025, around 6:30 p.m., after the tanker lost balance on a poorly maintained road and overturned, spilling highly flammable Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) into a nearby stream used for irrigation.

The situation escalated when the spilled fuel came into contact with an operating water pump, sparking a massive fire that quickly spread to the tanker, triggering an explosion. The flames engulfed nearby rice fields and fruit plantations, trapping several farmers working in the area.

The explosion claimed the lives of seven individuals, identified as:
  • Rafiatu Sahabi
  • Ramlat Shehu
  • Rashida Abdullahi
  • Raliya Abdulrahman
  • Zainab Ahmed
  • Zuwaira Idrisu
  • Maryam A. Nura
A sole survivor, Maimuna Isah, sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Saho Rami Primary Health Care Center.

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), through its Director-General Abdullahi Baba-Arah, confirmed the tragedy, attributing it to poor road infrastructure that forced the driver to maneuver dangerously, leading to the spill and explosion.

Emergency responders have been deployed to assess the damage and provide support to affected families. The incident underscores the urgent need for improved road networks in rural areas and stricter fuel transportation safety measures.

Authorities are expected to launch an investigation into the disaster while working to prevent future occurrences. The explosion comes just weeks after a similar tanker accident in January that left multiple casualties.
