Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to introduce a high-priced "Gold Card" residency permit, allowing affluent individuals to secure U.S. residency for a $5 million fee. Trump framed the initiative as a way to attract job creators and reduce the national deficit, calling it a premium alternative to the traditional green card.

At the White House, Trump stated that the program could generate significant revenue and provide a pathway to U.S. citizenship for those willing to invest. “This is for people who want to be here, build businesses, and create jobs,” he said, emphasizing that the policy targets wealthy applicants.

Trump suggested that the program could attract up to one million applicants and assured that thorough vetting procedures would be in place. However, when questioned about the eligibility of Russian oligarchs—many of whom have faced Western sanctions—Trump acknowledged that they could apply. "I know some Russian oligarchs who are very nice people. If they can afford it, why not?" he remarked.

The proposal has sparked debate in political circles, with critics arguing that it prioritizes wealth over merit in the immigration system. Some lawmakers fear it could be exploited by individuals seeking to bypass traditional immigration pathways. Meanwhile, supporters view it as an innovative approach to economic growth.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick supported the plan, stating that the funds could be used to tackle the U.S. deficit. Trump also joked that the card might bear his name, saying, "If calling it the 'Trump Gold Card' helps, go for it."
