The Trade Union Congress (TUC) plans a nationwide strike and protest over rising telecom tariffs, blaming foreign exchange mismanagement. TUC President Festus Osifo insists the government must stabilize the economy. The union’s leadership is finalizing a strike date as frustration over the high cost of living grows.
TUC President Festus Osifo made this known during an interview on Channels Television, attributing the price surge to foreign exchange mismanagement. He stressed that the government has the power to stabilize the economy and reduce business costs, particularly by addressing currency depreciation.
While acknowledging the challenges faced by telecom operators, Osifo maintained that the government must take responsibility for creating a stable economic environment. “If you allow the naira to keep losing value, the cost of living will continue to rise, affecting both businesses and citizens,” he said.
The union leader emphasized that the TUC is not politically motivated and is only advocating for the interests of Nigerian workers and the general public. He revealed that discussions within the union’s leadership structures, including the National Administrative Council (NAC) and National Executive Council (NEC), are ongoing to finalize the strike date.
When asked if the TUC would proceed with the planned action, Osifo responded, “Absolutely. We will down tools and take to the streets.”
The looming industrial action adds to the growing frustration over the high cost of living, with organized labor groups pushing for economic reforms to ease the financial strain on Nigerians.
