South African artist Tyla claimed the Best Afrobeats award at the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs), surpassing notable Nigerian nominees Burna Boy, Asake, Rema, Tems, and Ayra Starr. Held on November 10 at Co-op Arena, the EMAs celebrated its 30th anniversary, spotlighting the world’s top musical talents.
Tyla, who also took home awards for Best R&B and Best African Act, acknowledged the influence of Afrobeats on global music. She brought her sister, Sydney Seethal, on stage, expressing her gratitude to fans, family, and team for their support, and credited Afrobeats for opening doors for African music worldwide.
