The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has confirmed that the initial 30 kilometres of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway will be completed and inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu in May. Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos, Umahi highlighted the progress made despite initial obstacles, including rerouting to minimize demolitions.
Umahi revealed that a 10-kilometre stretch had to undergo extensive excavation due to years of refuse dumping, delaying the project. However, after thorough testing, the section is now stable for construction. He assured that 20 kilometres from Chennai zero to Chennai 20, plus another 10 kilometres near Eleko Junction, will be ready for commissioning.
Addressing concerns about property demolitions, Umahi confirmed that only one structure remains in the project's path, with negotiations finalized. Work will continue around the building while discussions with the owner conclude.
Additionally, Umahi announced that construction for section three of the highway, spanning 65 kilometres in Cross River and Akwa Ibom, has been awarded and will commence soon. He also stated that modifications are being made to minimize bridge construction, reducing costs and improving returns on investment.
The minister praised President Tinubu’s leadership, claiming that economic policies are yielding results, with the exchange rate stabilizing and GDP growth improving. He urged Nigerians to support the government's efforts, emphasizing national unity and development as priorities.
