Lagos residents can now breathe a sigh of relief as the Independence Bridge has been reopened following its temporary closure for repairs. Minister of Works David Umahi led the reopening, emphasizing that while permanent restoration will begin in three weeks, the bridge is currently safe for use.

Speaking to journalists in Lagos, Umahi assured the public that the structural integrity of the bridge remains intact. "We worked tirelessly through the night to ensure the bridge is open. By God's grace, I will be the first to pass over it, attesting to its safety," he stated.

The bridge’s closure had sparked public outcry, leading to severe gridlock in Victoria Island. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had earlier apologized for the inconvenience, urging residents to consider remote work to mitigate traffic disruptions. He reiterated that the rehabilitation was necessary to prevent further deterioration of one of the city’s oldest bridges.

While the reopening offers immediate relief, the federal government has confirmed that long-term repairs will commence soon to ensure the bridge remains durable for years to come.
