Pope Francis remains in critical condition at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, battling pneumonia and early signs of kidney failure. While under close medical supervision, the Vatican says his condition is stable but requires ongoing treatment. His hospitalization has raised global concerns as he missed the traditional Sunday Angelus prayer.

Pope Francis, 88, remains in critical condition at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital as medical tests indicate early signs of kidney failure, the Vatican announced on Sunday. The pontiff, who has been receiving treatment for pneumonia, continues to be monitored closely by his medical team.

The Pope was initially admitted on February 14 for what was suspected to be a respiratory infection. Further examinations revealed pneumonia in both lungs, requiring high-flow oxygen support. Despite his fragile condition, Vatican officials confirmed he remains mentally alert and participated in a private Holy Mass from his hospital room on Sunday.

Doctors have noted that while his kidney function is mildly impaired, the condition is currently under control. However, due to the complexity of his health issues, the Vatican has maintained a cautious outlook on his recovery.

Francis, known for his resilience, has faced multiple health challenges in recent years, including a partial lung removal in his youth, colon surgery in 2021, and hospitalization for bronchitis in 2023. His recent health setbacks have sparked concern among Catholics worldwide, especially as this marks one of his longest hospital stays since becoming Pope.

Due to his hospitalization, Pope Francis missed his traditional Sunday Angelus prayer, marking only the third time he has done so in his 12-year papacy. Despite his condition, he expressed gratitude to the medical staff for their care and vowed to continue his treatment.

The Vatican has yet to confirm when he will be discharged.
