US lawmakers have intensified pressure on President Joe Biden to intervene in the case of Tigran Gambaryan, a Binance executive detained in Nigeria since February. Gambaryan's health has deteriorated, with reports of malaria and inadequate treatment in Nigerian custody.
The lawmakers labeled his detention as a 'hostage' situation, urging immediate action from the Biden administration to secure his release. They emphasized concerns for Gambaryan's safety, stating that the accusations against him were baseless.
The letter, signed by 16 Republican congressmen including Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Michael McCaul, urged Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, Roger D. Carstens, to act swiftly. Gambaryan's case stems from allegations of money laundering and tax evasion, with his colleague, Nadeem Anjarwalla, facing similar charges. Anjarwalla, a British citizen, managed to escape custody but was re-arrested in Kenya.
Despite bail pleas, Gambaryan remains detained, raising concerns about his health and the legality of his confinement. The situation has sparked diplomatic tensions between the US and Nigeria, prompting calls for immediate resolution.
