The EFCC has arrested Professor Usman Yusuf, the former Executive Secretary of NHIS, for allegedly inflating the ICT budget and awarding contracts to family members. The charges include mismanagement of funds and approving contracts beyond his approval limits. He faces court arraignment following an investigation.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested Professor Usman Yusuf, the former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), on January 29, 2025, for alleged corruption. Yusuf is accused of inflating the ICT budget from N4.975 billion to N8.7 billion and awarding contracts to family members.
He reportedly approved contracts for companies with no competence and made payments beyond his approval limits. Yusuf’s arrest comes after a petition was submitted to the government detailing alleged misconduct and fraudulent practices during his tenure. His previous dismissal by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 followed findings of mismanagement of N919 million.
EFCC operatives raided his residence, and Yusuf is expected to face charges in court.
