Pope Francis remains hospitalized in Rome for a respiratory infection, with the Vatican confirming a “complex clinical situation.” Doctors adjusted his treatment after detecting a polymicrobial infection. His weekly audience has been canceled, and officials urge rest. This follows previous hospitalizations for bronchitis and other health concerns.

Pope Francis remains under medical care at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital as doctors treat what the Vatican describes as a “complex clinical situation.” The 88-year-old pontiff, who was admitted last Friday, is receiving treatment for a polymicrobial infection affecting his respiratory system.

According to Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni, the Pope had been experiencing bronchitis-like symptoms for several days before his hospitalization. As a result, he had delegated others to deliver his speeches at recent events. The Vatican initially stated that he was in stable condition but later clarified that his treatment plan had to be adjusted due to the complexity of his illness.

The Pope’s weekly general audience, typically held on Wednesdays, has been canceled to allow him to focus on recovery. Over the weekend, the Vatican emphasized that he had been advised to rest completely to support his healing process.

This latest health scare comes amid previous medical challenges for Pope Francis. In March 2023, he spent three nights at the same hospital receiving treatment for bronchitis. Later that year, he had to cancel his trip to the COP28 climate summit in the United Arab Emirates due to another illness.

Despite his hospitalization, the Pope has continued to meet with officials in his Vatican residence. However, his ability to deliver speeches has been limited due to his condition. The Vatican has assured the public that further updates on his health will be provided as his treatment progresses.
