Former Super Eagles striker and member of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) technical committee, Victor Nosa Ikpeba, shed light on the appointment of Finidi George as the new head coach of the national team.
According to Ikpeba, the decision to settle for George was primarily due to financial constraints faced by the NFF, despite initial considerations for foreign candidates. George, who recently led Enyimba to an NPFL title in his debut coaching season, served as an assistant coach under Jose Peseiro before assuming the interim coaching role during the March International break.
Although George's interim tenure saw a victory against Ghana, a loss to Mali in Morocco raised concerns. However, the NFF announced George's permanent appointment, with a focus on guiding the Super Eagles to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ikpeba emphasized that while the federation could afford a foreign coach, the preference for a Nigerian coach, echoed by the public, influenced their decision. George now faces the challenge of preparing the team for upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic in June, with just over a month to strategize and rally the squad
