On August 9, 2024, a tragic plane crash near São Paulo, Brazil, claimed the lives of all 62 passengers and crew aboard a Voepass Linhas Aéreas ATR 72-500. The aircraft, en route from Cascavel to São Paulo, lost signal shortly before 1:30 p.m. local time. Witnesses captured dramatic footage of the plane plummeting and crashing into a residential area in Vinhedo, igniting a massive fire. No casualties were reported on the ground.

The plane, which had been cruising at 17,000 feet, experienced a sudden drop of 17,000 feet in just one minute. Data from Flightradar24 shows erratic altitude changes before the descent. The last transmission from the plane was at 1:22 p.m., shortly before the crash.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva observed a minute of silence during a naval event to honor the victims. The São Paulo governor, Tarcísio de Freitas, has established a crisis cabinet to manage the response. Emergency services are working at the scene, with access restricted to private roads leading to the crash site.

The aircraft, acquired by Voepass in September 2022, had previously been restricted from air taxi operations. ATR, the plane's manufacturer, has expressed condolences and is aiding the investigation. The cause of the crash remains under investigation as authorities and aviation experts work to uncover what led to this devastating incident.
