Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has launched a scathing attack on Senate President Godswill Akpabio, accusing him of corruption and mistreatment of women. Atiku made these claims while discussing recent political tensions in an interview with Untold Stories host Adesuwa Giwa-Osagie.
Speaking on the allegations of sexual harassment against Akpabio, Atiku expressed no surprise, stating that the Senate President has a longstanding reputation for such behavior, dating back to his tenure as Akwa Ibom State governor.
Atiku also criticized the National Assembly’s decision to approve President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. He argued that the move was politically motivated and claimed that the Senate leadership, under Akpabio, operates with corruption at its core.
Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan had recently accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, alleging that he victimized her after she rejected his advances. Atiku referenced this case while condemning the broader leadership of the National Assembly, suggesting that corruption and abuse of power were widespread.
The crisis in Rivers State, which escalated due to tensions between Governor Sim Fubara and his predecessor, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, led to President Tinubu’s decision to impose emergency rule. The situation intensified after a Supreme Court ruling failed to resolve the standoff, prompting legislative intervention.
Despite the backlash, Atiku maintained that the Senate’s approval of the emergency declaration was expected, given what he described as Akpabio’s pattern of political manipulation and abuse of authority.
