On August 14, 2024, a group of street thugs attacked a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus in Orile, Lagos State, robbing passengers in broad daylight. The incident occurred around 1 p.m. when the bus, traveling from Mile 2 to CMS, was ambushed by individuals posing as protesters against the recent seizure of motorcycles by a task force. According to Dare Abiola, one of the victims, the attackers were disguised as protesters and violently broke the bus windows, targeting the passengers’ belongings. Abiola reported that his bag and phone were stolen, and he was threatened with a broken bottle during the robbery, which lasted about 20 to 30 minutes without any intervention from security forces.

The assault began when the bus reached the Odunade bus stop, where a crowd was gathered, and continued as they approached the Alafia bus stop near the NNPC fuel station. Abiola later went to the Orile police station to file a complaint. Lagos State Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin acknowledged the incident but stated that he did not have further details at the time. The attack highlights ongoing concerns about safety and security in public transportation in Lagos, raising questions about the effectiveness of law enforcement in managing such incidents.
