Former Kaduna governor Nasir el-Rufai has urged the North to renew its alliance with the South-South to "save" Nigeria. Speaking at Edwin Clark’s condolence visit, he emphasized historical ties and ongoing political shifts ahead of 2027 elections, hinting at a possible departure from the APC amid rising opposition coalitions.

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, has called for a renewed political alliance between the North and the South-South, saying such a partnership is crucial to "saving" Nigeria. He made this statement on Friday while visiting the family of Edwin Clark, the late Niger Delta elder statesman.

El-Rufai highlighted the historical ties between the two regions, noting that from the 1960s to the 1980s, the North and South-South were traditional political allies. He urged leaders to rekindle this partnership to address Nigeria’s challenges, calling it a necessary "rescue operation."

His comments come amid rising political maneuvering ahead of the 2027 elections, with opposition figures holding strategic meetings. El-Rufai, who was accompanied by Atiku Abubakar, praised the former vice president for driving economic reforms under the Olusegun Obasanjo administration (1999-2007).

In recent months, el-Rufai has met with key opposition figures, including Hamza Al-Mustapha and Shehu Gabam, sparking speculations about his political future. He has also hinted at a growing rift between himself and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), saying their differences continue to widen.

With Nigeria facing economic and political turbulence, el-Rufai's call for a North-South-South alliance could signal new realignments in the lead-up to the next general elections.
