Afropop star May D reflects on his tumultuous time with Square Records, recounting poor living conditions, career struggles, and his fallout with the label. He reveals that Davido found his accommodations unlivable and shares how the split derailed his music career, despite once ranking alongside Wizkid and Davido in the Nigerian music scene.
Afropop artist Akinmayokun Awodumila, better known as May D, has opened up about his struggles during his time with Square Records, the label formerly owned by P-Square duo Peter and Paul Okoye. Signed in 2011, May D parted ways with the label in 2012, a move he believes significantly impacted his career trajectory.
Speaking on The Honest Bunch podcast, May D revealed that his living conditions while signed to Square Records were so challenging that even Davido, who once visited him during a personal crisis, found it unbearable. "When Davido was running from his dad, he came to my room in P-Square’s house. He said, ‘May D, is this where you stay? I can’t sleep here,’” May D recounted.
The Ile Ijo singer further shared that he didn’t own a bank account during his time with the label, adding, “It’s only when someone has money that they open an account.” Reflecting on his early career, May D claimed he once ranked among the top artists in Nigeria, alongside Wizkid and Davido, stating, “Back then, it was Wizkid, Davido, and I. I was even bigger."
May D attributes his fallout with Square Records as a turning point in his career, emphasizing the impact it had on his growth in the music industry. Despite the setbacks, he remains a notable figure in Afropop, with fans and critics urging him to reinvent himself and reclaim his place in the spotlight.
