Rivers State witnessed a dramatic scene on Wednesday as Governor Siminalayi Fubara was locked out of the State House of Assembly complex upon arrival to present the 2025 budget. Security personnel at the entrance reportedly shut the gates, citing a lack of official communication between the governor and Speaker Martins Amaewhule.
However, Fubara insisted that he had formally notified the Assembly and even attempted to contact the Speaker prior to his arrival. The standoff highlights the deepening political crisis in Rivers, following Fubara’s recent directive for fresh local government elections, set for August 9, 2025. The Secretary to the State Government, Tammy Danagogo, had also requested a meeting with lawmakers to discuss budget re-presentation and peace talks, but the Assembly demanded that the invitation follow proper channels.
The situation raises constitutional concerns about executive-legislative relations in the state, further fueling tensions between Fubara and his political opponents.
