President Bola Tinubu’s warning of impending national bankruptcy has sparked backlash, as Nigerians criticize his recent $100 million aircraft purchase amid an economic crisis. Citizens demand accountability, questioning the administration’s priorities as high inflation, stagnant wages, and widespread poverty continue to worsen the nation’s living conditions.
President Bola Tinubu warned that Nigeria is on the brink of bankruptcy, urging newly appointed ministers to commit fully to rescuing the country from its economic challenges. Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony in Abuja, Tinubu acknowledged the difficulties facing the nation, calling on officials to serve selflessly. “We’re faced with a nation that is on the edge of bankruptcy, and that’s the truth,” he said, describing the situation as dire and demanding urgent action.
However, Tinubu's comments ignited public outrage due to his administration's recent high-profile spending. In August, Tinubu reportedly spent nearly $100 million on an A330 Brabus aircraft amid Nigeria’s severe cost-of-living crisis, high inflation, and widespread poverty. Although his aide claimed the aircraft was refurbished, Bloomberg’s report on its cost drew sharp criticism, with many Nigerians accusing the president of prioritizing luxury at the expense of national welfare.
Nigerians flooded social media to express their disapproval, calling Tinubu's statement hypocritical. Many questioned why funds were directed towards extravagant purchases while issues like escalating food prices, inadequate wages, and energy shortages remained unresolved. The delay in implementing a proposed N70,000 minimum wage has fueled further frustration, as citizens continue to struggle with basic expenses.
