The Lagos State Government asserts that a Federal High Court ruling restricting the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) from impounding vehicles in Abuja does not apply in Lagos. Commissioner Oluwaseun Osiyemi emphasizes the legality of VIO operations in Lagos under the Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.

The Lagos State Government has clarified that a recent Federal High Court ruling in Abuja, which restricts the Directorate of Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) from stopping or impounding vehicles, does not affect its operations in Lagos. Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, explained that the court’s jurisdiction is limited to Abuja and that the ruling does not apply in Lagos, where the Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018 grants the VIO authority to enforce traffic regulations.

Osiyemi emphasized that the law clearly outlines the VIO's responsibilities and powers, including the ability to impose penalties for traffic violations. He noted that the Federal High Court's decision does not negate the established laws in Lagos State.

In light of the ruling, he urged motorists to continue adhering to traffic laws and to cooperate with VIO officials. The commissioner reassured the public that the VIO's operations are fully supported by state legislation and will proceed as normal, aiming to ensure safety and compliance on Lagos roads. As motorists navigate the city, adherence to the Transport Sector Reform Law remains essential for maintaining order and safety.
