The Digest:

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released results for the 2025 Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE) for private candidates, recording a 42.17 percent pass rate. According to a statement by Acting Head of Public Affairs Moyosola Adesina, 65,752 candidates sat the examination at 370 centres across Nigeria between November 11 and December 17, 2025. Results for 61,943 candidates (94.21 percent) have been released, while 3,809 (5.79 percent) are still being processed due to "errors traceable to them." A total of 27,727 candidates obtained credit in five subjects including English and Mathematics. WAEC noted 235 candidates with special needs participated, including visually impaired, hearing impaired, and albinos. The examination body is transitioning all WASSCE to CBT following a ministerial directive to curb malpractice.

Key Points:
  • The 42.17% pass rate highlights persistent academic challenges despite the transition to CBT.
  • It provides crucial certification for private candidates seeking admission or employment.
  • Successful candidates gain qualifications, while WAEC refines its digital examination platform.
  • This signals the impact of CBT on examination integrity and candidate performance.
  • The timing, with results released, allows candidates to plan next steps.
WAEC's second CBT WASSCE shows gradual improvement in digital examination delivery, though pass rates remain low, indicating need for enhanced preparation.
