In a highly anticipated announcement, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the results of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates, held between October 27 and December 20, 2023.
The examination, a pivotal gateway for tertiary education admissions in Nigeria, saw 80,904 out of the 85,600 registered candidates participating across 568 examination centers nationwide. Of significant note is the 44.29% pass rate, with only 35,830 candidates achieving credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
Delving deeper, WAEC disclosed that 17,631 male candidates and 18,199 female candidates secured these credits, highlighting a near gender parity in performance.
However, the examination body cautioned against direct comparison with the WASSCE for school candidates, emphasizing the optional nature of subject selection for private candidates. Furthermore, WAEC revealed that 7,192 results are currently withheld due to alleged infractions, pending investigation.
