Abia State Governor Alex Otti has pledged swift action to improve the deteriorating facilities at Abia State University (ABSU) after an unscheduled visit left him shocked. During the visit, which followed a church service in Umuahia, Otti inspected the university's hostels, classrooms, and staff school, expressing deep disappointment over the poor learning conditions.

Acknowledging that the situation worsened before his tenure, he still took responsibility and apologized to the students on behalf of the government. He assured them that urgent renovations would begin immediately, including the demolition and reconstruction of the staff school, rehabilitation of hostels, and provision of basic amenities like power and water.

Otti further instructed the Vice-Chancellor to develop a phased plan to refurbish student accommodations while new hostels were under construction. He also directed the establishment of a functional cafeteria, citing health concerns over students cooking inside their rooms.

In a move to consolidate academic activities, the governor announced that the Faculties of Law and Agriculture would be relocated from Umuahia back to the main Uturu campus. He promised that construction of the new faculty buildings and 5,000-capacity hostel would commence within a week and be completed in four months.

Students, who gathered in large numbers to witness the visit, welcomed his commitments with cheers. Otti reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to providing a conducive learning environment, ensuring that ABSU regains its status as a top institution in the region.
