Lagos Speaker Mojisola Meranda presided over plenary amid heavy police and DSS presence following attempts to reinstate former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. Lawmakers backed Meranda with a confidence vote, rejecting Obasa’s claims. Meanwhile, the appointment of a new police commissioner fuels speculation about the ongoing leadership crisis.

The Lagos State House of Assembly witnessed heightened security on Monday as Speaker Mojisola Meranda presided over plenary amid a heavy police and DSS presence. The session followed a tense standoff at the assembly complex, where security operatives attempted to access the chambers but were resisted by lawmakers and assembly staff. Despite the dramatic scenes, Meranda, who was escorted into the chamber by her supporters, successfully led the proceedings, reinforcing her position as Speaker.

During the session, 32 out of 40 lawmakers passed a vote of confidence in Meranda, dismissing attempts to reinstate former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. The embattled ex-speaker had been removed in January over allegations of misconduct, paving the way for Meranda’s historic emergence as the first female Speaker of the House. Meanwhile, the appointment of Moshood Jimoh as Lagos' new Commissioner of Police has raised speculation about its link to the ongoing leadership crisis. Despite resistance from Obasa, who insists his removal was illegitimate, Meranda has received backing from the ruling APC’s top advisory body and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
