When Nigeria charts new roads, not all regions seem to be on the map. The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has publicly criticised the federal government, led by President Bola Tinubu, for excluding parts of Northern Nigeria, particularly the fragile North East, from key infrastructure funding. For a nation aspiring to unity, such an imbalance may pave a dangerous route.
According to Premium Times, the NEF has raised alarm over what it sees as lopsided infrastructure funding that sidelines the North, particularly the underserved North East.
- NEF accuses the federal government of prioritising Southern Nigeria in infrastructure funding
- Lagos–Calabar Highway and other Southern projects reportedly get the lion’s share
- Northern projects cited as tokenistic in value and scope
- NEF warns exclusion threatens national unity
- Group demands immediate redress and funding rebalance toward the North East
For NEF, the concern isn't just regional,it’s national. Unequal roads may lead to unequal futures.
