Mojisola Meranda, a Lagos royal and seasoned lawmaker, has become the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, recently elected as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has made history as the first female speaker since 1999. Representing Apapa Constituency I, her journey to leadership spans a rich background in public service, private enterprise, and active politics.
Born on August 16, 1980, into Lagos royalty, Meranda is a descendant of the Ojora and Oniru royal families. Her father, the late Chief T. A. Lawal Akapo, served as a legislator and later became the Ojora of Lagos. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from Lagos State University and a Master’s in Public and International Affairs from the University of Lagos. Meranda is currently pursuing an MBA at the University of York, UK.
Her career began as a personal assistant to a senior adviser in the Tinubu administration and later spanned roles in the oil and gas industry. In Apapa Local Government, she served as the Senior Special Assistant on Intervention and Inter-Governmental Relations and as a Health Supervisor.
Meranda entered the Lagos State House of Assembly in 2015. Over three terms, she rose through the ranks, chairing committees on Women's Affairs, Pensions, and Public Service. Before she was elected Speaker, she served as Deputy Speaker of the 10th Assembly.
