The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled September 25 for the arraignment of MTN Nigeria’s CEO, Karl Toriola, and three other executives. The group is facing allegations of obstructing a lawful investigation by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC)
  • Toriola and the executives are accused of failing to comply with a lawful FCCPC summons.
  • MTN allegedly refused to submit requested documents tied to an ongoing consumer protection inquiry.
  • The commission claims this violates Section 33(3) of the FCCPC Act.
  • No legal representatives appeared for the defendants during the last court session.
  • The FCCPC says attempts to serve court documents have been repeatedly evaded.

This is not the first time Toriola has been flagged for evading legal processes. In May 2024, the Nigerian Copyright Commission also accused him of dodging service in a separate copyright infringement case. The recurring pattern raises serious questions about corporate accountability in Nigeria’s telecom sector.

With MTN’s leadership again under scrutiny, stakeholders and consumers alike will be watching closely. September’s court date could set a legal tone for corporate transparency—or deepen mistrust.
